50.5° South

This work, 50.5° South, was made in Patagonia and focuses on the stretches of road between the region’s better-known destinations. While traveling between iconic locations, I began looking more closely at the landscapes between them. These interstitial spaces became the subject. What had once felt secondary began to carry more weight. The photographs were made from within vehicles, through windows, windshields and doors. What was seen was shaped by weather, distance, and fluctuating visibility. Like an old film reel unwinding and snapping through monochrome images, the random fragments coalesced to capture the mood, the essence of Patagonia. The blur of transit brought clarity. A rendering of remote, isolated, and overlooked beauty emerged. Without these details, the recollection felt off balance, incomplete. Unfamiliar locations propel a desire to see everything all at once. If the speed is reduced, the gradual unfolding of chance encounters yields a different and perhaps more lasting sense of a place. The quiet beauty of in-between moments offers an opportunity to complete the puzzle of one's place in the world.
